 Alchemists – men born with the unique gift of creating potions – have always been valuable contributors to the Izumu society. This was unexpectedly cut short by the new emperor, Katsuro, who banned the craft and introduced other controversial sociopolitical and religious reforms. The persecuted alchemists continue to practice their craft in secret, dreaming of the day they have their revenge.

 In the midst of all this, the path of Ryuuji, a mysterious man running from his past, crosses with the one of Akira – a child gifted with unimaginable alchemical potential. Out of lack of a better option, the two decide to join forces. Together, they unravel the mysteries of Izumu and its rulers, meet a cast of diverse characters, and eventually become a part of the complex political landscape themselves
